On Sunday, October 4th, Nick and I were a part of the First Annual Reunion Celebration for Kellogg Cancer Care Centers at Wagner Farm in Glenview, Illinois. The afternoon was a ton of fun with awesome people , yummy snacks, and absolutely perfect weather! For a first time event, turnout was HUGE with nearly 600 Kellogg cancer survivors, staff and their families in attendance. We wandered around the beautiful grounds of Wagner Farm, took a ride in the back of a horse drawn carriage and dodged children as they ran around to get their faces painted, decorate pumpkins, or watch the cows get milked.

Nick and I ‘worked’ in the farmhouse, manning the giant piles of donated snacks and refreshments. That area of the event was being run by Beth, a very cool , young woman who is a survivor herself. Somehow, Beth put us in charge of handing out pumpkin shaped sugar cookies. The two sisters that donated all 400 cookies to the event, were also the ones who beautifully hand decorated, individually wrapped and delivered the cookies to us after baking them in their kitchen.

A traveling art exhibit honoring the journey of those whose lives have been affected by cancer, Oncology on Canvas, was on display in the farmhouse alongside patient educational materials provided by OSI and other oncology companies.

The whole scene was free to attendees, including the generous amounts of donated snacks and refreshments. All of the labor for the attractions, setup and clean up was run exclusively by volunteers and super enthusiastic local high school students. High Schools Against Cancer (HSAC), a club recently founded by Glenbrook South sophomore Hallie Herrmann to help raise awareness and money for the American Cancer Society. Unlike Mean Girls or any of the the horrifying high school reality shows I can’t avoid being exposed to on TV, these kids were really genuine, impressive, and inspiring. The whole event was free to attendees and something awesome to be a part of. A special Thanks to Gail Ronkoske who coordinated the event and, in addition to always being great, forced us to take a ride on the horse drawn wagon. Also thanks to the folks on the Oncology Patient Advisory Board and our new friend Beth for letting us be a part of the celebration.

Bethany road 80 miles for a total of 2 days. Bahar & Nick road 197 miles in 3 days. The event was very uplifting and fun. All the people involved with the event were extremely friendly.

The 1st night we stayed at cabins in Lake Geneva, IL. The 2nd night we stayed at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Overall it was a great experience, our legs are sore, but we are stronger than before and will continue to be!

Flickr Photos of the event: Click Here

It was a 1st experience of all of us. Either one of us have road our bikes that long before. It was also Bahar’s 1st experience in receiving a bee sting.

Just 4 day before the race Bahar experienced her 1st big crash on Lake Shore Drive with her new bike. She fell on her head and actually cracked her helmet. Later on we went to the hospital and found out that she had a mild concussion. She was still ok to ride the 197 miles. She is such a trooper!!

RACING TO BEAT CANCER ONE STRIDE AT A TIME

It has been a long process, but it looks like all of the planning and hardwork is coming to fruition for the first ever SLU Cancer Center Billiken5K Run/Walk. Back in February a meeting was held with members of the Saint Louis University Cancer Center and Athletics Department to work on “Cancer Awareness Week” during a men’s and women’s basketball game to raise awareness and money for the Saint Louis University Cancer Center. As the discussion progressed, the idea for the race blossomed to get people involved as opposed to just inviting them to an event. Everyone agreed that the race was a fantastic idea, but we soon realized none of us had any idea how to put on such an event! Over the next couple of months we solidified a date, contacted vendors, secured Big River Running to handle the race itself and worked on logo design and marketing the event.

So here we are now, just over 2 weeks out with around 120 participants. We are happy with the turnout but would love to get up to between 300-500 in year one. This is definitely going to become and annual event and hopefully grows each year.

Big Thanks to Dr. Mark Varvares and Kathleen Luther from the Cancer Center and Alyssa Levin, Eric Mueller and Brian Kunderman from Athletics for putting this event together.

Whether you are competitive runner, a recreational walker or just someone who cares about the fight against cancer, this race is for YOU! The race is at 7:30 am on Saturday, August 29 at Saint Louis University and follows a scenic path through the midtown campus.

All net proceeds benefit the Saint Louis University Cancer Center. Registration is only $20! For more information or to register for the event, please visit www.billiken5k.com.

On a beautiful Saturday Bahar & Nick drove to Carol Stream, IL to participate in the Bud’s Run event.

Bahar ran the 5k a race with 500 other runners and walkers. Bahar placed top 10 in her age group and is determined to go back next year and get top 3. Nick stayed behind and talked with the CEO of Sarcoma of America, Matt Alsante.

Nick Schmidt & Matt Alsante

He was there to show support for research on the cure for sarcoma cancer. All of the money donated from the event was given to the Sarcoma of America.

Matt was a great person and I had a lot of laughs with him. He was very polite and he introduced me to Sharon Swanson. Sharon is Bud’s wife and for the last 6 years she has organized the run every year. Each year it increases awareness and increases in volume of participates. Matt gave Sharon an award to recognize her accomplishments with the run event.

The Des Plaines River Canoe Marathon, founded in 1957 by Ralph Frese, is the second oldest continual canoe race in the United States.

Over 2000 participants are grouped in classes for juniors to masters, men, women, mixed, and adult-child. All types of canoes, including recreation or aluminum canoes, competition cruisers, sea kayaks, and down river kayaks, are welcome.

It was a great time with the 4 members:Bahar, Bethany, Nick Schmidt, Ryan.

It was actually Nick Schmidt’s 1st canoe ride ever. After the event they relaxed and recharged at Boca dei Beppo.
